You all might know that 8th graders in magnet have been building their roller coasters for the contest at Knotts berry farm. And on the topic of roller coasters let’s talk about the roller coasters that have set world records.
- What is the longest roller coaster in the world in time?
The longest roller coaster in the world is Steel Dragon 2000. This roller coaster is located at Nagashima Spa Land in Japan. Steel Dragon was opened to the public on August 1, 2000. The roller coaster takes 4 minutes from beginning to end. That is a long time for a roller coaster. The average roller coaster takes less than two minutes to go through. Impressive right?
- What is the world’s tallest roller coaster in the world?
The tallest roller coaster is located at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, United States. Its name is Kingda Ka. And not only is it the tallest roller coaster in the world but it is also the fastest roller coaster in North America. It is 456 feet tall. Look at it this way, the Statue of Liberty is 305 feet tall. That makes Kingda Ka taller than the Statue of liberty. That is tall. Did you know that in 2009 this famous roller coaster got struck by lightning? Luckily it got fixed up and it is back.

This roller coaster impressively goes 149 mph, which is way faster than you are allowed to go on the freeway. Formula Rossa is a famous roller coaster in Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Roller coasters that are like in Disney land usually go around 45 mph which is slow for a roller coaster and the pretty fast roller coasters go around 100 mph. The average roller coaster would be in between and 149 is fast for a roller coaster.

The oldest roller coaster in the world is Leap the Dips. It was constructed in 1902 and still stands. This roller coaster is located at Lakemont Park near Altoona, Pennsylvania. It is 41 feet tall and the fastest it goes is 18 mph. Even though there is not much there it is amazing that they kept it. It is a very historical roller coaster.
